undergrad

***NEW*** applications open for one undergraduate paid intern via the MITACS program for Summer 2024. Please see advert for details

At the undergraduate level there are a number of possible positions. ACRG team members work with animals and must undergo extensive ethics and animal husbandry training. Therefore, we only accept students who can work in the laboratory for a minimum of two semesters. Students working in the ACRG are expected to take Psych 282 (Behavioural modification) and Psych 381 (Principles of Learning) before or during their tenure in the laboratory. Students are normally asked to volunteer for a semester (see below what this entails) before they can take on independent study or honours thesis on the team.

  1. Volunteers (no syllabus; 1 semester minimum required before moving onto Independent study or Thesis)
  2. Independent study (syllabus, 2-semester minimum)
  3. Thesis (syllabus; 2 years)

Volunteers take an online ethics course provided by the U of A and are trained in animal husbandry techniques. Volunteers are expected to help with animal husbandry ~ 3 days per week (Monday-Friday). Independent study students will assist current graduate students, animal husbandry, and may take the lead on independent projects. May include working in the laboratory on some weekends. Thesis students will assist current graduate students in their first year, animal husbandry, and develop an original project for their second year. May include working in the laboratory on some weekends.

When applying please indicate which level you are interesting in and when you have taken/will take Psych 282 and 381. All applications should send the following via email to guillett@ualberta.ca with the subject “Ugrad application” in the subject line:

  1. One paragraph on your general interest in the ACRG and the skills that you bring. Let me know why you are interested in animal learning/cognition and what kind of experience you will bring to the team (e.g., statistics, data processing, behavioural scoring, programming, written and oral communication, etc.), and, what kind of skills you are hoping to take from the ACRG.
  2. One paragraph on your specific interests, based on a recent paper from the ACRG. Look at our Publications page on the ACRG website and select a paper. Read the paper and reflect on the findings. Summarize the key aspects of the design, what the main findings were, and, suggest a new experiment based on what you have read.
  3. Current (unofficial) transcript. Please let me know if there is anything I should know about regarding your current academic progress.
