From Mathewson to Mayflower

Just a slight divergence from brain science for a second so I can put down in writing one of my genealogical histories.

Priscilla Mullins was on the mayflower with her Mom Alice Atwood and dad William Mullins (who died the year the boat landed in the great sickness)

She married John Alden, who also arrived on the first mayflower voyage.

John Alden won Priscilla from another suiter and another Mayflower Pilgrim, Myles Standish, another distant relative of ours through the DeWolf/Kirtland line on You grandma’ carrie’s mom’s side.

There is a well known poem “The Courtship of Miles Standish” about a love triangle between John Alden, Myles Standish, and Priscilla Mullins

Myles Standish is not the proven father of Thomas Standish, however, so this case isn’t as strong…

Back to John Alden and Priscilla Mullins, they had a daughter Elizabeth in 1624

daught. Elizabeth Pabodie m. John Rogers

daught. Hanna Rogers m. Lt. Samuel Bradford

daught. Jerusha Bradford m. Reverend Ebineezer Gay

son. Martin Gay in 1728 m Mary Pinckney

MARTIN GAY is a proven descendant from the mayflower, according to to a document “Mayflower births and deaths, Vol. 1 and 2

So Martin Gay and Mark Pinckney’s Daughter, Mary Gay, is a mayflower descendant:

  1. Dear Kyle-
I am one of your cousins, the daughter of Kenneth Black Mathewson, one of your dad’s first cousins (who passed away on July 23, 2013). As you may know, my dad was a keen Mathewson genealogist over many decades and particularly since my retirement in 2009, I have been actively pursuing it too, with a particular interest in historic photos and portraits. Am delighted to see that at least one of Bill and Mufty’s offspring has taken up an interest in family history – you are carrying on a wonderful family tradition! Would love to communicate with you further on family lore, should you feel so inclined. Sue

  2. Hi Kyle-
Hoping to hear back from you re genealogy matters. I understand you are a psychologist. I just retired as a clinical psychologist in late 2009, after 41 years! My daughter Laurel now has a PhD in Psychology (from McGill) and is in private practice in Ottawa, where I now reside as well. Glad to see the scanned family photos being put to good use. Sue
