He has been investigating the biology of aggressive behaviour in one way or another since his M.Sc fieldwork investigating threat display use in American coots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.psych.ualberta.ca\/~phurd\/hurdlab\/graphics\/pete.jpg\" alt=\"Pete Hurd\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Grad Students:<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Matt Ian Helgesen: <\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">was a Ph.D. student in the Lab. Ian arrived with a B.A. in Statistics and Psychology from the University of Minnesota-Morris, and some graduate schooling in Statistics from Iowa State University. He had also been a Research Intern at the Dolphin Research Center, Grassy Key, FL, and a Statistical Programmer Analyst a the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. His research projects in the Hurd lab were centered on theoretical models of aggression and territoriality. Ian passed away in the Summer of 2011, and is greatly missed by everyone in the lab, the Department, the <a href=\"https:\/\/bikeedmonton.ca\/\">Edmonton Bicycle Commuters&#8217; Society<\/a> and beyond.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Kennedy Fjellner: <\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">M.Sc. student studying examining the relationship between developmental stress, growth rate, telomere length and social behaviour in cichlid fish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Taylor Irvine: Studying hormonal correlates of social behaviour and the effect of birth control medication in humans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Undergraduates<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Paige Vandenberg: Studying alternative male morphs in kribensis cichlids.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Zoe Kruschke: nonapeptides and social behaviour differences between alternative morphs in cichlid fish.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Katelyn Wonsiak: realtime telometry monitoring of social behaviour in cichlid fish.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bianca Cioceanu: studying individual differences in connections to and from the habenula in humans, in collaboration with Carol Boliek and Jacqueline Cummine in Rehabilitation Medicine.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Hurd Lab Members Prof. Peter Hurd Dr. Hurd&#8217;s background is in biology, specifically in the evolution of animal behaviour.
