The principal SynAD outputs are the 64 peer-reviewed small grants we have awarded to promote ADRD research at the University of Alberta. As described on the SynAD Activities page, the grants are awarded in three categories: Catalyst Research, Small Equipment, and Trainee Support. Some of these awards have begun to produce longer-term (or secondary) outputs ranging from scientific products to public acknowledgments. We are sorting these into three categories: (1) notable recognitions and related activities, (2) publications and other written reports, and (3) conference and other formal presentations. The SynAD team is continuously collecting information pertaining to these emerging downstream outputs.

SynAD Recognitions

SynAD grantee (Graduate Student Trainee Grant) Laszlo Locskai (Biological Sciences, Science) has been awarded a CIHR CGS-D Doctoral Scholarship. This prestigious award will allow Laszlo to continue his research linking TBI with seizures and tauopathy in a zebrafish model under the supervision of Dr. Ted Allison.

SynAD member Simonetta Sipione (Department of Pharmacology and Neuroscience and Mental Health Institute) received a new grant from CIHR entitled: The role of glycosphingolipids in the secretion and clearance of EVs in brain health and disease, based on preliminary studies funded by a SynAD Catalyst Grant award from 2019-2020. She also received matching funds from a GlycoNET grant entitled Modulatory and therapeutic roles of gangliosides in neurodegeneration and neuroinflammation, based in part on data generated with SynAD support (2020-2021).

SynAD support to Marek Michalak (Biochemistry; Small Equipment Grant) has been reported as instrumental in supporting research on membrane associated chaperones and their role in protein folding and protein folding disease, including Alzheimer’s and other neurodegenerative diseases. This resulted in several recent research publications and has helped secure end MS Scholarship funding for graduate student Tautvydas Paskevicius.

Trevor Steve (Medicine, Neurology) was named a Future Leader in Canadian Brain Research. For this honour, he received a $100,000 special grant award from Brain Canada to further his research in hippocampal biomarkers of Alzheimer’s disease. Trevor Steve received a SynAD catalyst award in 2018-2019.
