Dr. Wendy Hoglund (she\/her) conducts basic and applied research on social and emotional development in childhood and adolescence. Her research primarily investigates within-group variability in the experiences and adjustment of marginalized and racialized children and adolescents, with a focus on how setting-level influences can promote resiliency among children and adolescents.<\/p>\n

Most typically, her research investigates how the quality of interactions with peers and teachers relate to self-regulation in early childhood and to internalizing symptoms in childhood and adolescence. Her applied community-engaged research examines how classroom instructional practices contribute to children\u2019s social, emotional and academic competencies.<\/p>\n

Dr. Hoglund\u2019s research has been funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC), PolicyWise for Children & Families, Women and Children\u2019s Health Research Institute (WCHRI), and the Killam Cornerstone Grant Program.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Hi! My name is Haley, and I am the Lab Manager for the PEERS Lab. My research interests include developmental psychopathology, specifically externalizing behaviours in children. I recently completed my Bachelor of Science in Honors Psychology and a summer project funded by WCHRI and URI on the relationship between self-regulation and ADHD symptoms, both in the PEERS Lab. I would love to use the skills I learned in the lab in graduate studies in clinical or counselling child psychology. I am a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Psychology at the University of Alberta. My research focuses on examining how internal and external socio-emotional factors can help mitigate the risk of developing reading disabilities in early childhood. This work builds on my doctoral thesis, which examined cognitive mechanisms underlying the development of reading fluency among children with and without reading disabilities. My research has been published in Scientific Studies of Reading, Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, and Reading and Writing. Hi! My name is Jiachen, and I am an incoming PhD student in Developmental Science at the University of Alberta. My research interests focus on children\u2019s and adolescents\u2019 mental health in school settings, particularly their social and emotional development, and how everyday experiences such as peer relationships, classroom interactions, and family context shape students\u2019 well-being. I am especially interested in early identification of emotional risk and developing school-based approaches to better support students. Hi! I\u2019m Livia. I\u2019m from Vancouver Island and I moved to Edmonton to study at the University of Alberta. I joined the PEERS Lab in 2024 and recently completed my BA (Hons.) in Psychology. Since May 2025, I have been working in the PEERS Lab as a research assistant and I am so excited to be continuing in the PEERS Lab as a Master\u2019s Student! Hi, my name is Jessica! My research interests lie in the socioemotional development of children and youth. I am particularly interested in internalizing disorders (e.g. anxiety) <\/span><\/font>and the ways in which different relationships, such as familial and teacher relationships, impact social and emotional functioning in these populations. Hello everyone! I am a fifth-year student at the University of Alberta in my second year of the BSc Honors Psychology Program. I am returning to the PEERS Lab this year after completing a year-long internship through the Science Internship Program at Boyle Street Education Centre! My honors thesis explores the association between homophobic victimization and internalizing problems, particularly loneliness, in adolescence. I have further research interests in the mental health outcomes of marginalized youth, particularly those with intersecting identities, and critical studies in psychology. In the future, I hope to pursue graduate studies in Social Work. In addition to my academics at the UofA, I am also a member of the Pandas Tennis Team! In my (limited) free time, I enjoy playing my guitar, riding my bike, reading (especially in a hammock), and being outside. Hello everyone! I’m a fifth-year BA psychology student and second-year undergraduate honors student. I’m pleased to be a part of the PEERS lab and I’m excited to finish my thesis and take on new challenges in the years ahead. My research interests center on how children learn to self-regulate and the role aggression plays in that process. Hi everyone! I\u2019m a fourth-year student at the University of Alberta, and this is my first year in both the BSc Honours Program and the PEERS Lab. My research interests are fairly broad, but I\u2019m especially interested in how teacher perceptions shape children\u2019s emotional development and how these experiences may differ across cultural and ethnic backgrounds. My interest in developmental psychology began through my volunteer work with Taking Strides Edmonton, a student-led organization supporting children with neurodevelopmental disorders. This experience deepened my passion for understanding and supporting children\u2019s mental health. In the future, I hope to pursue graduate studies in school psychology. I will be starting my honours degree with the PEERS Lab this year, and I am excited to gain hands-on research experience. My interests lie in developmental and social psychology, particularly in understanding how exposure to early stress may shape later outcomes. My passion for psychology was inspired by growing up with my younger brother, who has autism. Hi! I\u2019m Pihu, a third-year BA Psychology student about to begin my first year in the honours program. My research interests focus on neurodevelopmental disorders, particularly ADHD in South Asian girls. I\u2019m especially interested in how patriarchal socialization can complicate diagnosis, with masking often misinterpreted as propriety or good behaviour. I\u2019m currently reading about the overlap between dysgraphia and ADHD in South Asian youth. In the future, I hope to pursue a direct-entry PhD in School and Educational Psychology. My research interests include supportive instructional practices and child development, immigrant children\u2019s social and emotional adjustment, neurodiverse child and peer dynamics, and holistic therapeutic approaches such as music therapy\/sound healing. In the future, I hope to pursue my graduate studies in Clinical Psychology through a MSc and PhD program. Outside of academics, I\u2019m a singer and trained Indian classical dancer who enjoys crocheting, cooking, working out and spending time with family. Hi everyone! I am a second-year student at the University of Alberta pursuing a BSc in Psychology, and an aspiring Honors student. I am thrilled to be returning to the PEERS Lab this year to continue my research as an Independent Study student! I find it very interesting to explore self-regulation and socioemotional development as a result of peer-child relationships, particularly during the developmental years of immigrant students. My ultimate goal is to pursue a career in counselling psychology, followed by public speaking to advocate for mental health. Hi, I\u2019m Aaleyah, and I\u2019m exploring my research interests in child development, specifically with learning disabilities and literacy. I volunteer with a couple literacy charities around Edmonton coaching kids and helping them improve their literacy, so I was really excited to volunteer with the PEERS Lab and learn about the research side of things. My goal in the future is to pursue clinical or counselling studies in developmental psychology. Hi! My name is Mariana Tafur, and I\u2019m a fourth-year BA Psychology student and an international student from Colombia completing my degree at the University of Alberta. My research interests range from neurocognitive and developmental psychology to psychopathology, psycholinguistics, and child development, particularly how cognitive and neurological processes influence children\u2019s development and behaviour. In the future, I hope to pursue a career in clinical psychology or occupational therapy. This is my second year at the PEERS Lab, and I\u2019m very excited to continue developing my research skills and learning from the lab!
