Through the past few months the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has drastically changed our daily lives, from our health and safety practices to the ways we work and study. It has also affected our relationships with other people, including people from other ethnic groups. This research program is broadly concerned with how the pandemic has affected your life.

Principal and Co-Investigators

Kimberly A. Noels

Kimberly A. Noels (PhD, University of Ottawa) is a Full Professor of Psychology at the University of Alberta. Her interdisciplinary research program focuses on how language and identity develop as immigrants settle into Canada, and how their social interactions with established Canadians facilitate or impede the complex, dynamic processes of language acquisition, social-psychological adaptation, and acculturation.

Nigel Mantou Lou

Nigel Mantou Lou (Ph.D., Univerity of Alberta) is a post-doc fellow at McGill University. His research interests include intercultural communication, mental health, and the psychology of immigration. He is also interested in impact of COVID-19 on intergroup relations and mental health.

Ying Shan Doris Zhang

Ying Shan Doris Zhang is a Ph.D. Candidate in the Department of Psychology at the University of Alberta. Doris’ research interests include intercultural transitions and the psychology of acculturation, as well as the impact of other socio-cultural factors on the health and well-being of ethnic racial minorities.

Yekta Sharafaddin-zadeh

Yekta Sharafaddin-zadeh (MSc. Candidate, University of Alberta) is a Master student in Psychology at the University of Alberta. Her research studies focus on how knowledge in academia can be mobilized for laypersons and audiences. She also focuses on group dynamics and how socio-cultural influences can impact this complex relationship.
